Live From the Basement Lounge

My friend, DJ Lord Monsta, DJ and Understudy to Brother J of XCLAN, did a show this past Thursday night at The Basement Lounge in the East Arts Village of Long Beach! The Basement is a cool place. I've lived in the EAV back when it was called Downtown and the Broadlind Hotel was a vacant piece of ish when I lived there. Since then, it's been restored to it's old beautiful self and businesses are thriving in the area. Hell, I was walking home one night from a poetry reading on Linden Ave and there was an underground party happening in the Broadlind. There were about three skinheads who saw me and decided they wanted to step to me. I had three books of loose leaf poetry notebooks in one hand, it was dark, and I was alone. I started to run but my hand went towards my waistband and those fools backed the hell up and left me alone. True! I hadn't reached for anything except my poetry! I didn't want to have pages flying all over Linden and Broadway and get my azz kicked to boot!

So, now the neighborhood has come a long way from where it was. I walked into the club and folks were cooling after a great Laker Championship Victory! I met Ashley Dominique, the hostess and promoter, who gave me a press pass and let me shoot pics for A Choice of Weapons. The Music was cool! Got to see two DJ's do they thang, got to see Ashley get down! She can really rap and saw another Sistah get down on the mike as well.

There were alot of different folks in there from all sectors of life and it was beautiful! Dig! Plus DJ Lord Monsta rox it!

Anatomy of a House Nigga!

House Nigga, Slave, Sell Out! Negro! Calling a Black person any of these names can get you killed! You don't just throw them out flippantly and not prepare yourself for the potential consequences. On the other hand, if someone refers to you as one of these you might wanna run!


About a decade ago, University of California Regent, Ward Connelley, ushered in Prop 209. This banned affirmative action in admissions considerations to University of California Schools. This happened on then Governor Pete Wilson (R) watch. That, coupled with Prop 187 which banned services to Illegal immigrants made for an interesting year.



When Ward Connelley proposed Prop 209 Black Folks spoke loudly against it! Affirmative Action had only been in effect and enforced since the 1970's. It had a chilling effect on the amount of Black Students admitted to the UC Schools. This year, UCLA for instance had 96 Black Students receive degrees. UCLA has over 10,000 Students! You do the math!



It's funny cause when you heard Ward Connelley speak his point of view doesn't sound sinister. On the surface it sounds as if it's designed to leave the academic merits as the sole basis for entering the University. Fairness, Right? But we all know that admissions aren't decided on merit! The Universities themselves survive and thrive based on Philanthropist's, alumni contributions, federal and state subsidies and monies raised from the sports programs. Bowl games anyone?



You mean to tell me that all those "Special interests" received no favors when a student representing them applied for admission? Come on! You mean to tell me there were so many Black Folks, going to UCLA for example, in the 1990's, that it affected the campus majority racial complexion so much so that when Prop 209 was enforced that 96 Black Folks graduated in 2010?

So, what makes a Black Person who agrees with Connelley a Sell Out for instance? First, the majority of Black Folks were not in agreement with him. Does that make White Folks who don't agree with the majority view of White Folks a sell out Mista Jaycee?

I'll let you answer that. Black People told Ward Connelley this was a bad idea. It was pointed out that enforcement of Affirmative Action had was only about 30 years old, and however, flawed, it may be it still, had yet to counteract the unfair advantage, given to the majority White Populace over their Black Contempories. It was pointed out that schooling up to the college and University levels were still sub-standard in Black and Majority neighborhoods. It was pointed out that there had been no demonstration of wide spread discrimination against White people as a result of Affirmative Action. It was pointed out that the real beneficiaries of Affirmative Action were in fact White Women who while they out number Men are considered a Minority! Go Figure! None of these things, for instance, deterred Ward Connelley. Only a certain segment of powerful White interests backed Connelley. He ignored it! But what makes Connelley a Sell out is this. After you could clearly see the negative effect that passing this law had done you still went and sponsored it in other states. Connelley went so far as to turn a profit of over a Million Dollars in speaking engagements. That's when White Folks got mad! When they found out they Nigger, oops did I say that? I mean, Ward Connelley was making Money off it!

You mean you were selling out your own people's interests just on the goodness of your own heart? Oh, Ward!

Even after he could see the devastation he'd wrought he still carried on! That's my friends is a sell-out! He still preaches the party line! That my friends is a house nigger! Now, don't just read this and move on. Comment! Let's talk!

Gary "Diaper Man" Shider Passes at 56

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Guitarist Gary Shider has passed away from complications from Brain and Lung cancer. He was 56. The Plainsfield, New Jersey native, came to prominence and fame as a member of Parliament/Funkadelic. He was the musical director of the band for more than 20 years. He wrote or co-wrote several of the bands hits including "One Nation under a Groove "and "Unfunky UFO" ! Like Bootsy Collins and George Clinton, Shider was known not just for his showmanship and muscianship but by the characters he played onstage including "Starchild" and his signiture character "Diaperman"!

A tall Black Dude in a diaper was my introduction to P Funks live shows. You had to be a fearless dude to wear a diaper and and play before 50, 000 people every night! Now Gary rests awaiting the Resurrection of our Lord on the Last day! The Mother Ship will come and it is my hope that Gary will be in God's Teleporter! He is survived on earth by his Wife, Linda. A Choice of Weapons offers all our love and condolences to you and your family.

Lakers Win 16th NBA Championship!

How sweet it is! The Most Beloved Los Angeles Lakers won the 2010 NBA Championship trophy at home against the Most Hated Boston Celtics last night in a seven game series. Banner # 16! Whoo Whoo! This is one of the most enduring rivalries in all of sports with the Most Hated Boston Celtics setting the standard with the most championship banners.

Congratulations to the Los Angeles Lakers! And Big up to the Most Hated Boston Celtics! You fought honorably and deserve the respect that comes with all your hard work! Doc Rivers is a great Coach! To my Blog buddy Double R, I say this with love! YAY! The Lakers WON!

Louisiana gave us Jazz, Good Food, Beautiful scenery, Mardi Gras, Dale Brown and the 2009 Saints and the world was better for it! And how do you repay them? Faulty Levies, an eroded seaboard, ever worsening hurricanes, Bobby Jindel, the Katrina debacle and now an oil spill that threatens to alter and destroy life literally!

What the Hell?

Drill Baby Drill! This is what we get for listening to the Palinites! Safety! Baby! Safety! It wasn't like we didn't know that a disaster of this magnitude could happen. We knew! We said it! Yes, we did! And many a President resisted the cries for Off-Shore drilling!

Mr. Obama are you gonna do the right thing? Regulation! Real Regulation! Real Safety Checks! A Real moratorium on all Off-Shore drilling until these things are done! There will be folks who will call for your head on it but it's the right thing to do and it needs to be done! Hell, we need Men to stand up and do the right thing!

Hell, America might choke if you do the RIGHT thing but DO it anyway! America's strong and can handle it!

Game 4 Tonight!

The Most Beloved Los Angeles Lakers defeated the Most Hated Boston Celtics in game 3 of the 2010 NBA Finals. This has been a wonderful series! Both teams are making the other sweat blood!

The only downside to this series seems to be the officiating! One night no fouls are called on the Celtics! The next night all fouls are called on the Lakers! Let them Play! Boston has worked hard to get here! The Lakers have worked hard to get here! Both teams deserve the right to win the Championship or Lose it by what they've done on the court! Not because of bad calls!

Funk Bassist Marvin Isley has passed!

Funk Bassist, Marvin Isley of the Isley Brothers has passed of diabetes at the age of 56. Part of the younger group of Brothers that included guitarist Ernie, and cousin keyboardist Chris Jasper, Marvin help take the Family unit to a more modern, and most notably funky level!

Sleep well with the Knowledge that God (IAM) will wake you soon, smile and say well done.

Lakers Lose Game 2

The Most Beloved Los Angeles Lakers lost game two of the 2010 NBA Finals to the Most Hated Boston Celtics Basketball Clubs, Sunday night!

It was a great game! In fact, this is one the best finals series that I've seen in years! Both clubs are here to win. Of course, I want the Most Beloved Lakers to triumph but each game has been worthy of my attention! Go on and admit it! In previous years We all knew who was gonna win before the series even started. Not this time!

Lakers Win Finals Game 1

Well alright! The Most Beloved Los Angeles Lakers defeated the Most Hated Boston Celtics in game 1 of the 2010 NBA Finals! The Lakers played defense and had a great offensive game but don't get cocky. The Celtics have done more than enough to earn your respect. Play hard every game and don't sleep!

Sure, the Most Hated Boston Celtics Suck! (They can't help it! They're NOT the Lakers) but they DO have 17 Championship banners and their legends, Mr. Bill Russell, Larry Bird and the Gang, while HATED and Despised, are universally respected and admired.

Now, if we can just get Charles Barkley, Kenny Smith and Ernie from TNT to announce the finals then HELL YEAH!

Daddy/Daughter Day!

"Junior" and I got together to talk and have dinner. My Daughter decided that she wanted Jamaican Food, so she picked out a restaurant in Los Angeles not too far from Leimert Park. I was a little worried cause I'm eating meatless meals now and I didn't know if I would be able to eat anything.

The drive was nice. Most of the homes in the neighborhood, are the large old style homes, such as the ones in View Park. We passed Lil Ethiopia and I pointed out the great row of restaurants available. Maybe, another time.

So, we arrived at Natraliart, a nice lil Jamaican food bistro, right smack dabbed in a working class neighborhood. I'm still eating a meatless diet so Curry Goat was out of the question! But "Junior" ate it for both of us! I had the Ital Stew with the veggies. It had a dumplin in it! It's nice, small and clean. It ain't fancy and foo-foo so don't be saddity!

MMMMMMMMMMM! Cool place! Good Vibes! Great tastin food! Plus, I had great company! Daddy/Daughter day is always cool! Now, it's time for Wife/Husband Day! Here's the info and no one paid us or gave us anything for free!
