Bam Bam Bows!

The bow is perhaps one of the most misunderstood traditions in martial arts. Many people may think of it as a religious affiliation or as a sign of a master-slave type relationship between an instructor and his or her student. This interpretation is false. Instead, the bow is done to show humility and is used to express a lack of arrogance. In addition, it serves as a sign of mutual respect between teachers and students and between practitioners and opponents. If you were to compare the Asian bow to a Western tradition, it would most closely represent the handshake. Courtesy of LOTUS Martial Arts

Obama bowed! That's what they were commentating on this passed weekend. "It's beneath Presidential dignity!"

Why? Because no American President has ever done this in memory?

In rebuttal to the charge that it's beneath Presidential dignity I would like to interject that Barack Obama is no Ordinary American President!

There has never been a American Black President! Never! So everything that Obama does is going to be a first! Everything Obama does will have a lasting effect for years to come!

So, pardon a Brotha for trying to be a polite President.

Now, as to that Presidential dignity thing.... Bush Jr. Didn't add alot of that to the office. He held congress, the constitution, the Bill of Rights, The United Nations and so on in open contempt! The rest of the World's rights, opinions be Damned cause God (IAM) made him President!

No, even though America may be a Super Power it won't hurt America for its head of state to practice humility and be Meek.

Seems to me another Chief was all about meekness......What was his name again???

Oh Yeah, Jesus!

BE Careful! BE Mindful! BE Prayerful!

Mista Jaycee great article...I read a piece that ask the question: When will the dollar stop bowing to the Yen? Now that's something to think about.

america's problem is ARROGANCE. there is no cultural protocol for american's. they think they can take their ideals all over the world and everyone else should bow to them. uggghhhh!!!

i don't identify with being american. i am a child of Hawai'i, not the political/legal State of Hawaii.

Hi Neena,
Long time no see. (wink)
That's a harsh generalized criticism. I don't think that American's feel that way. I think certain people with access to power do.

American people do welcome everyone and include that groups culture sometimes to our detriment and annoyance. Walk my neighborhood. You can see Khmer, Spainish, Thai and Veit, within two blocks of a mostly Black/Hispanic Neighborhood. We all need to be willing to learn, tolerate and embrace each others ideas and cultures.

I remeber awhile ago they made a hissy fir cause he bowed to the king of Saudi ( I think it was him, don't quote me on that) the fact of the matter is, Pres. Obama has manners.

Yesterday at our potluck T-day lunch at work, I neiled my head & prayed over my food. An attorney looked at me side-ways...

No matter what he does he's going to be critisized. He knows that, and that's whats so great about him...

Obama wasn't the first president to bow to a foreign leader.

Eisenhower bowed to Charles de Gaulle for example.

This "controversy" is manufactured.

I appreciate this post. I feel that Obama's behavior is considered questionable only to those who still haven't come to terms with him winning the Presidency and want to pick at every big and small thing he does.
